Manual Machinist – 1st & 2nd Shift

Our Richmond location in Virginia provides a dynamic work environment and a chance to join our team as a Manual Machinist.


The Machinist will be responsible for producing parts by programming or running conventional (manual) machines; setting up and operating a traditional (manual) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; and maintaining equipment and supplies.

Duties Include:

  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters, interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T)
  • Controls mills and lathes by turning handles, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Sets mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers, indicating vices and tramming heads
  • Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run parts, and sample workpieces, adhering to international standards
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting, sharpening, and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and calling for repairs
  • Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications
  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments

Working Conditions

  • Typical manufacturing facility conditions (Indoors ~95% / Outdoors ~5%)
  • The facility is heated in winter but not air-conditioned in summer
  • The employee must be able to stand on concrete floors for a minimum of eight hours. Kneeling, squatting, bending over, and standing for long periods may be required to perform assigned tasks
  • Can occasionally be loud, especially in local areas where grinding or machine testing occurs. Ear plugs are provided for work performed where noise is a factor

Other:

  • Must have own essential tools. The list of Teammate-provided tools includes box/open end/socket wrench sets, Allen wrench sets, screwdriver sets, tap handles, pliers, combination square, 9″ level, wire strippers, side cutters, and tape measure. English and metric tool sets are recommended. A lockable toolbox is also recommended
  • Safety glasses and steel-toed safety shoes are required
  • Long pants and a sleeved shirt (short sleeve at a minimum) are required
